When I went to boot camp the battle of Tarawa was something we were taught about in Marine Corps history. The high point as I recall was that the landing craft were not tracked, and got hung up on coral reefs. A lot of troops had to wade ashore for a few hundred yards in chest deep water, while being shot at by the defenders. A lot of casualties. When the 2d Marine Division landed on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll on 20 November , twenty years of Marine Corps study and work, already tested at Guadalcanal and at Bougainville, was put to an acid test. Tarawa was the first example in history of a sea-borne assault against a heavily defended coral atoll.
