When I went to boot camp the battle of Tarawa was something we were taught about in Marine Corps history. The high point as I recall was that the landing craft were not tracked, and got hung up on coral reefs. A lot of troops had to wade ashore for a few hundred yards in chest deep water, while being shot at by the defenders. A lot of casualties. When the 2d Marine Division landed on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll on 20 November , twenty years of Marine Corps study and work, already tested at Guadalcanal and at Bougainville, was put to an acid test. Tarawa was the first example in history of a sea-borne assault against a heavily defended coral atoll.

"Tarawa" is as factually accurate as the sources from which its subject matter was obtained. In the first six chapters there is no surmise; the facts are presented as they were recorded or obtained through interview. The last chapter sets forth, briefly, the importance and success of the battle for Tarawa, and mentions some of the lessons learned. With the Marines at Tarawa is a short documentary film directed by Louis Hayward. It uses authentic footage taken at the Battle of Tarawa to tell the story of the American servicemen from the time they get the news that they are to participate in the invasion to the final taking of the island and raising of the Stars and ed by: Louis Hayward (uncredited).

The US Marine Corps cameraman, Sargeant Norman Hatch, narrates the footage he shot during the Marines' landing on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll . THE BATTLE OF TARAWA CRITERIA: THE LIVING TARAWA VETERANS ROSTER WILL REMAIN 'OPEN' AND ACCESSIBLE TO ALL LIVING TARAWA VETERANS WHO HAVE BEEN ALIVE SINCE THE ROSTER'S BEGINNING IN This includes Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, Seabees and Army personnel.
